Curriculum
The SMU-TESOL Certificate Program is an MA level two-semester program, condensed into 4.5 months(18 weeks). The curriculum consists of 4 core subject courses- Intercultural Communication, Methodology I & II and Second Language Acquisition, and two support courses, Academic Skills Development and Methodology Practicum. All courses are taught in English by highly qualified and experienced native speaking faculty.
Content(4) Courses
- 1) Methodology I - From Activities to Lessons :
Methodology 1 is designed to improve pre-service and in-service EFL teachers’ decision-making and lesson-planning skills. Students consider how languages are learned and how teachers help students develop. Students also explore research-driven principles of lesson planning and practical strategies to teach all language skills and systems.
- 2) Methodology II - Management, Materials & Assessment :
Methodology 2 is designed to improve pre-service and in-service EFL teachers’ ability to teach and assess students effectively in their classrooms. This course focuses on trainees’ future students’ needs and realistic teaching contexts for SMU graduates, such as exam-preparation courses and textbook-based classes. Methodology 2 also features a set of lessons about Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) designed to introduce students to the fundamentals of teaching content such as math, science, and art in English.
- 3) Second Language Acquisition :
Effective teachers know how we acquire a language. SLA covers how we learn our first language, vocabulary, pronunciation, grammar, motivation and memory. Importantly, it directly connects to Methodology and Intercultural Communication. SLA gives an essential perspective on efficient and effective ways to approach teaching and learning.
- 4) Intercultural Communication for Language Teachers :
People use language to develop relationships with others with different worldviews. Likewise, teachers and students co-construct the environment of their learning. Students learn to describe people using language to negotiate shared cultures with others, and to evaluate the learning cultures of different teachers and students.
Support Courses
Academic Skills Development
To facilitate trainees’ growth both as English teachers and English users, Academic Skills Development offers trainees instruction in the fundamentals of academic writing with a focus on supporting the writing requirements of SMU content courses.
