In keeping with Sookmyung Women’s University’s proud history of work for the development of women through education, I am very pleased to announce the establishment of the SMART program. SMART, Sookmyung Academic and Real-world Training, has been carefully designed to bridge a gap in women’s development in our society. Though women have advanced in all segments of society, up to the presidency of our country, they are still often excluded from top posts in the business world. Globally, women still earn less than men in spite of equally high levels of education, experience, and ability. In a step to change these conditions for the betterment of women and society, we have developed the SMART program.
The SMART program has been designed to train students in real-world negotiation skills that will help them advocate for opportunity and advancement in broad areas of work. Because these skills are more frequently exercised in the global language of English, SMART classes will also be conducted in English. And because these negotiations require complex communicative interaction, we chose to house this program with Sookmyung TESOL. As the nation’s first and number one ranked TESOL program in the country, SMU TESOL has developed a highly interactive curriculum of English teacher development. These activities involve negotiation and the development of professional interpersonal communication skills in English. The SMART curriculum has been designed under the same principles for graduate success in professional business and social communities of work. Graduates will be able to apply the skills they have learned through SMART for advancement in their chosen fields of business, social action, or future academic work.
It is our intention that Sookmyung Academic and Real-world Training will help students develop the interactive social skills in global communication that will allow them to fill leadership roles in society and business. Under the guidance of SMU TESOL’s faculty and staff, I am confident that SMART’s innovative curriculum will develop student competence in the interactive communicative English skills that will drive their future success and achievement. SMART graduate achievement will surely be another step forward for women!

SMART 프로그램의 출범은 그 사이 여성인재 양성에 전력을 기울여온 숙명여대의 교육이념에 부합되는 매우 뜻깊은 일입니다. SMART 커리큘럼은 현장에서 기능할수 있는 언어능력향상을 목표로 개발되었고, 따라서 SMART는 사회에서 필요로 하는 여성인재 양성에 일익을 담당하게 될 것입니다. 대통령직 수행을 비롯해서 여성인재가 이미 각계 각층에 배출되어 있는게 사실이지만, 아직은 여성 진출이 부진하거나 만족스럽지 못한 영역들이 있는게 현실입니다. 동등한 학력 및 능력을 지닌 여성들이, 특히 비즈니스 계통에서는 남성인력에 비견되는 예우를 못 받는 것이 국제적 현실이라 할 수 있습니다. SMART 프로그램은 여성인재를 통한 사회발전을 도모하는 숙명 교육정책의 반영이며, 따라서 이 새로운 발걸음에 거는 기대가 큽니다.
SMART 프로그램은 협상능력을 기반으로, 졸업생들이 다양한 국제적 세팅에서의 역할 수행 및 성장을 도모할 수 있도록 디자인 되었습니다. 이러한 협상능력은 복합적인 의사소통 능력 향상에 그 기반을 두고 있고, 따라서 SMART 프로그램은 숙명 테솔 프로그램과 연계하여 운영이 됩니다. 영어교사교육의 전당으로, 이미 국제적인 명성을 획득한 숙명 테솔 프로그램은 언어능력 향상에 필요한 제반이론, 기술 및 방법론 등을 축적해 왔습니다. 이들 노하우를 바탕으로 개발된 SMART 프로그램은 학습자들의 의사소통 능력 향상을 최우선으로 하고 있고, 이는 비즈니스 및 다양한 업무능력의 승패를 좌우하게 됩니다. SMART 졸업생들은 이러한 소통 및 협상 능력을 자신들의 전공분야, 비즈니스 분야, 사회기구 활동, 혹은 학계에서의 활동의 근간으로 활용하게 될 것입니다.
SMART 프로그램이 재학생들에게 다양한 국제적 세팅에서 소통할 수 있는 능력을 키워줄 것을 기대합니다. SMART가 운영하는 혁신적인 영어프로그램들이 국제사회가 필요로하는 인재를 배출하고, 이들이 국제무대에서 주어진 역할들을 성공적으로 성취해 나갈 것임을 믿어 의심치 않습니다.
