For almost two decades, Sookmyung TESOL has been taking innovative steps to guide the evolution of English education in Korea and beyond. In keeping with such innovation, I am pleased to share the news that this September, we will be opening a new language training center called SMART, which stands for Sookmyung Academic and Real-world Training. SMART is our latest addition, joining our existing TESOL program. We hope that SMART serves the wider community by providing the highest quality, specially tailored English courses designed and taught according to Sookmyung TESOL’s renowned principles.
Sookmyung TESOL has always used proficiency-oriented, task (project)-based learning, interactive, and intercultural approaches in course design and instruction. Applying these to SMART, we want to help language learners develop proficiency in English as a Global Language. We want to help them to develop their communicative and negotiating language skills so that they can accomplish academic, social, or business objectives in a wide range of global contexts.
What does it mean to use English as a Global Language? In reality, over 70% of interactions in English happen among non-native speakers of English. So, we see that ownership of the language no longer belongs mainly to native speakers, but to all English users. This means our community needs programs that will help learners communicate in English with everyone. Learners who complete a SMART course will have the confidence to expand their networks to both native speakers and speakers of other languages. Learners will get plenty of practice in both communication and accuracy. These SMART graduates gain access to knowledge bases all over the world, increasing their sociocultural capital and influence.

숙명테솔은 지난 20여년간 국.내외에서 영어교육의 발전을 위해 파격적 행보를 이어왔습니다. 그 행보중의 하나로, 이제 SMART 라는 명칭의 언어교육원을 출범하게 되었음을 기쁘게 생각합니다. SMART는 제반 국제 상황에서의 안정된 언어구사 능력을 할 수 있는 인재양성을 그 운영 목표로 하고 있습니다. SMART는 숙명이 추구하는 교육 이론 및 방법론을 활용한 강좌들을 운영하면서 일반 학습자들을 교육하고자 합니다.
숙명테솔은 언어의 유창성뿐만이 아니라 그 효용성에 학습 목표를 두며, 프로젝트 기반 학습을 중요시 합니다. 따라서 SMART 프로그램은 학습자들이 영어를 국제어로 사용할 수 있는 소양을 키워내는데 그 역점을 두고 있습니다. 다시 말해, 국제 비즈니스, 학문적 교류, 혹은 제반 사회-문화적 세팅에서의 다양한 미션을 성공적으로 수행할 수 있는 소통 및 협상 능력을 키우고자 합니다.
영어를 국제어로 사용한다는 것은 무엇일까요? 현실적으로, 영어로 이루어지는 모든 소통의 70% 이상이 영어를 외국어로 사용하는 사람들 사이에서 이루어진다는 통계수치가 있습니다. 이미 영어의 소유권은, 그 언어를 사용하는 모든 사람에게로 이양 되었습니다. 이는 어느 누구와도 소통이 가능한 언어사용 능력 신장이, 그 어느 때보다도 필요한 과제라는 의미입니다. 따라서 SMART 의 모든 과정은 다양한 언어사용자들과 편안하게 소통할 수 있는 능력을 키우는데 역점을 두고 있습니다. 학습자들은 의사소통 능력뿐만이 아니라, 그 정확성을 높이기 위해 다양한 훈련을 하게 될 것입니다. 따라서 SMART와 함께 성장한 학습자는 영어 웹기반의 모든 지식 및 영어 사용 국제 휴먼네트워크에 연결되고, 그 영향력을 공유하게 됩니다.
