Welcoming Address

President, Sun Hye Hwang Sookmyung Women’s Univ

The Mecca of Teacher Training

Sookmyung Women’s University was established in 1906 under the auspices of promoting modesty, wisdom and justice at a tumultuous time in our nation’s history.

With the 110-year tradition of excellence in education, research, and community service, Sookmyung is proudly seeking to bring about another RENAISSANCE in education. We would like to equip our students with the proper skills they will need in order to face an ever-changing future and become the ‘leaders of tomorrow’.

Sookmyung’s genuine commitment to educate and inspire students is clearly exemplified in the various programs of Sookmyung TESOL. In 1997, Sookmyung Women’s University introduced the first ever TESOL program in Korea in cooperation with the University of Maryland, Baltimore County. This spirit of collaboration can also be seen in the partnerships we have established with more than thirty prestigious universities in the USA, Australia, and Canada that recognize Sookmyung’s academic excellence through credit transfer programs.

Following on the initial success of the TESOL certification program, we began the first MA TESOL program in Korea in 1999, followed by YL-TESOL (TESOL for Young Learners) certificate program in 2005. The program was further expanded in 2007 to include training for in-service public school teachers in an intensive program commissioned by the Ministry of Education, Science, and Technology.

Such a remarkable educational achievement culminated in the establishment of an undergraduate departmental unit of TESL in 2011. In addition, the PL-TESOL program for teachers of preschool and kindergarten-aged learners was launched in 2013. It is truly a testament to the dynamism and innovative spirit of our top-notch faculty members who offer TESOL training to educators in both the public and private sector, to students of all ages from birth to adults.

As Sookmyung TESOL celebrates its 20th anniversary this year, the program continues to research and embrace the latest advances in technology in order to further expand its offerings to today’s busy student educators. Online learning resources have now been seamlessly integrated into all of Sookmyung TESOL’s on-campus programs, improving communication and the sharing of information and resources between students and professors. I am proud of Sookmyung TESOL faculty’s constant commitment to updating, and renewing its various training programs. Such efforts allow us to meet the ever-changing needs of the educators as we encourage each of them to “redefine your tomorrow” and become a crucial part of reshaping the future of English education in Korea and beyond.

As Sookmyung TESOL looks forward to the next 20 years, our faculty pledges to embrace and respond to the ever-changing needs of both educators and students as both technology and cross-cultural communication continue to become increasingly important facets of everyday life. We heartily welcome all who would join us in this endeavor to continue to lead in the unceasing evolution of English education in Korea and around the world.

President, Jung Ai Kang, Ph.D. Sookmyung Women’s Univ.
